Properties and applications of thermally modified
wood
The thermal modification enhances the properties of wood in following
aspects:
> Shrinking and swelling with the changes in moisture is reduced
> The dimensional stability is improved
> Decay and weather resistance is improved
> Wood becomes throughout dark, to varying shades of brown, depending on
the temperature
> The mechanical properties of wood are impaired to some extent
In some applications these properties enhance the usability as
following:
> Explicit increase in dimensional stability of parquet floors
> Non-toxic alternative to be used in garden furniture, for instance
> Tropical rainforests are saved because dark species are to be replaced
with domestic wood
> Wood wearing, for ex. in corners of furniture, does not cause any
discolouring
