In 1950 young Matti Uimonen, M.Sc.(Eng.), started his career among timber
drying kilns. The first few years he worked as a researcher at the
governments technology research center, VTT, but as early as 1953 he was
already involved in business life, delivering his first kiln to a customer.
In 1954 Mr. Uimonen shifted completely to business life when he was hired
to Industria Ltd. as a designer for timber drying kilns and as a sales
manager for woodworking machines.
In 1957 Matti Uimonen established, together with his
three colleagues, a company specialized in sawmill machines and was named
as Sateko Oy. The company expanded rapidly mainly as a result of the
numerous patents they got for the innovational solutions. The company had
patents in battening, log sorting and timber drying kilns, among many
others.
In the 60’s Sateko was the market leader in battening and sorting machines
in Finland and Sweden, where the company was called Sågteknik Ab. In the
70’s the number of employees exceeded 100 people. Sateko also had a
remarkable share in the trade between Finland and Soviet Union and as a
result, is also mentioned in learning books of that era as a model example
of the sawmill technology.
In 1978 Sateko was acquired by a new owner, who wanted
to gain technical advantage in battening machines. Sateko’s branch in Lahti
was drying kilns and import and trade for woodworking machines. This branch
was re-acquired by Matti Uimonen. The company was named as Tekma Oy and its
business continued as before.
In 1988 the change of generation resulted in splitting the business of
Tekma into two segments. The import and trade of woodworking machines
continued under the name Tekma, and the business area of drying kilns under
the name Tekma Kuivaamot Oy.
As the export increased its share of the everyday business,
Tekma Kuivaamot Oy changed its name as Tekmawood Oy. As a result of
continous research and development in 1998, the first heat treatment
equipment was assembled. The basis of the equipment is in the 40-year
experience in timber drying. Heat treatment, or Thermowood-process,
business moved under its own company, Tekmaheat Oy, which was in 2004
acquired back under the Tekmawood’s organization.
Jartek Termo Oy merged to its' mother company Jartek Oy at the end of
the year 2008.
